Chapter 15 [Return to New Briar]
Sergeant Major Shaw, First Sergeant Sweetwater, and Staff Sergeant Steerhelm return to New Briar under the order of Captain Nola Whimsir. The squad is assigned to protect an expedition tasked with recovering a relic deep inside the Blackfens The expedition consists of 10 dwarven miners who are led by Orthur Faldak (adult dwarf).
Though, the squad also learns that Archcleric Kilvir Stoneroot has passed away, and the flags of the New Briar will hang at half-mast for one for each year of his life.
The dangers of the swamp include winged felines with humanoids faces, enormous crocodiles, and a presumed family of dracolisks, but the dwarves are kept safe and proceed to dig toward the acid tunnels below the surface.

Chapter 16 [Recovering the Relic]
The dwarves reach the tunnels below, and the squad splits up to proceed with the mission and keep the more vulnerable members on the surface.
Orthur Faldak leads Sergeant Major Shaw, Master Sergeant Steerhelm, the Blistering Blade of the Fortieth Blaze upon Erebus (Barbazu), and the undead horde through the underground maze while First Sergeant Sweetwater and the other Nemedorans guard the miners at the campsite.
Ghoul and Master Sergeant Steerhelm spot a Xorn trailing the squad on a couple of occasions, but it sinks into the stone each time before anything can really be ascertained about it. The heavy Ghoul falls through a weakened tunnel floor and into an acid below but is saved by his master. The squad is also swarmed by thousands of cave ants that prove to be rather relentless in the narrow passages but are ultimately squashed and scattered. The most perilous threat comes in the form of a ghostly dragon within haunted drow ruins, but it is vanquished, and the relic is recovered.

Chapter 17 [Delivering the Relic]
The squad reunites momentarily and only to prepare for another division. This time Command Sergeant Major Shaw (joined by a divine cohort - Garm) and First Sergeant Sweetwater stay at the campsite with their soldiers to protect Orthur Faldak and the relic until they are able to travel to New Briar by magical means in the morning.
Meanwhile, First Sergeant Steerhelm (joined by a skeletal cohort - Skeletor) leads the other miners north under the protection of his undead horde in the hopes of exiting the swamp by nightfall and drawing attention away from those protecting the relic.
The campsite is visited by an immense and unusual being adorned in jewelry and with an appetite for rare gems and precious metals. It claims to have previously done much to clear the acid tunnels of dangers and wishes to receive a tribute for those who passed through with relative safety. An agreement is reached with the squad, and the Eye that Watches the Maw departs by sinking seamlessly into the ground.
As the sky grows dark, however, heavy rain turns the damp ground to mud, and the camp is attacked first by the familiar pack of winged felines with humanoids faces, and then by several dragons who are seeking something recently brought into this world. Somehow and just barely, the squad manages to kill one of the larger dragons and drive the others away.
The rest of the night passes without incident, and the squad windwalks at a rapid pace to New Briar. The relic is handed over to the new Archcleric Gilgyth Hammerhall who thanks the Nemedorans for their service to his city.
