Chapter 5: Taking the Tower - winding down
I added the CR info to the second post (Points & Rewards) in this thread. It's been neat seeing the story posts, and sometime before the next session (which still needs to be figured out and I'm flexible about), I will post a summary of where things are going generally as the evening of Day 16 winds down. Basically, it'll be what you know before going to sleep.
Chapter 6
I have the outline of this one finished. Just need to fill in stats and flesh out details. The only thing I can really say is that you won't get any specific info prior to the session. You can ask questions, but I may not be able to answer and can't promise the answer will have anything to do with the next session. I don't mean to make this sound so secretive. It's just that there's no reason at this point for you to know exactly what is coming up, and I think we've played through enough sessions that you'll know how to handle whatever I present (i.e. if I give you an NPC to control or mounts or special equipment, it won't be this bizarre new concept).
I guess one other thing I can mention is that it won't be one long combat, but there won't be any shortage of combat either.
EDIT: Also, there won't be a countdown that automatically ends combat this time around. Which isn't to say that there may not be reasons to do things quickly, but taking your time won't guarantee that you lose.

Scheduling
Do people (Enric, icnivad, michael) want to play War Stories next week on Tuesday, April 6th? The next adventure is almost ready. Will just need to tweak a few things for 3 players instead of 4. And players still need to level up to 6th and select rewards from Chapter 4: The Siege of Verdas. Any rewards not selected can be saved for later use. This is another perk of having a returning character vs a new character because new characters cannot save lines from starting packages to be used later.

Anyone else? Once characters are complete, players will receive additional info.

Yeah, that works best for me, too. I'll post my character info later this week.

On the Adventuring Gear list in the Equipment chapter, there's an entry for "Case, map, or scroll." It's referring to mundane scrolls, not spell scrolls, but the weight should be the same.

Just a reminder that we're playing tonight at 7pm, and feel free to show up early if you need help with leveling up or equipment.
On the Adventuring Gear list in the Equipment chapter, there's an entry for "Case, map, or scroll." It's referring to mundane scrolls, not spell scrolls, but the weight should be the same. I agree that mundane and magic scrolls probably weigh the same amount, but I think this entry (Case, map or scroll) is actually referring to a map case or scroll case. Like, if the entry said "shield, light or heavy" it would be talking about a light shield or heavy shield. Since potions weigh 0.1 lb, I'd be inclined to say that scrolls weigh 0.2 lb. So, a little heavier but not by much.

I haven't had a chance to look over my character in a while, but I think I'm pretty well leveled up. I'm at a client's all day so I won't be able to look at it, but I'll try to show up a little early to go over it. We're level 12 now, right?

I don't have much time to look into the armor spikes question today, but I will say that a horse can use armor spikes with the -4 penalty to attack for not being proficient with the weapon. I can look into it more for the next session, but that is how it would work for tonight. And they will cost/weigh more based on barding rules for a Large creature. And YES, the Additional magic items entry can be used to purchase wands with as little or as many charges as you can afford, but keep in mind the caster level limit (which differs depending on package). Also, be sure to list out any new equipment under each entry line. That way it is easy to check what item comes from which entry to make sure it is appropriate and doesn't exceed the gp limit.

OK, I thought that after I read it. But at first glance I was confused, a lot can happen when your gone. There needs to be a font for "sarcasm."

Good job everyone with preventing the camp from burning down! I will be posting a recap in the story thread, which will include mission info & objectives, and be sure to post any questions that still need to be answered.
A couple things briefly...
Everyone will receive a heavy horse for the mission, and in order to stick to the time frame, the horses will have to move at their max speed (50 ft = 5 mi/hr), and therefore, keep to a light load. This means a horse cannot have more than 399 lbs of weight on it between saddle, barding, rider, and rider equipment. Items can be left behind or held by others to make this work. Otherwise, the horses would move at 35 ft (3.5 mi/hr).
The ride to the Rift is 20 miles. The Rift is another 30 miles to cross. 50 miles will take 10 hours of riding at a speed of 50 ft. Therefore, it will require a full 8 hours of daily movement for the horses, plus two hours of making a Forced March. This will get you out of the Rift.
Once on the other side of the rift, it is 10 miles as the crow flies to the last known location of the Red Blade battalion. However, this is 10 miles through the mountains, so not a direct route. Survival checks will be made to wind through the mountains as quickly as possible. 10-14 miles would require two more Forced March checks (total of 4 FM checks at this point if done in a single day), 15 miles would require another, 20 miles would require another, and so on.
To recap, it is at least 60 miles to pick up the trail. The horses move at 5 mi/hr. After 8 hours of riding, each additional hour requires a Forced March check that gets harder with each hour.
The second thing is...cancel what I said about endure elements potions. They won't work in the Rift and that would be known. While in the Rift, creatures are exposed to dangerous heat in the day and dangerous cold at night. More info on that later today.

Is that to say the rift (and a mile in all directions) is a complete 'magic dead zone'? Or is it more that magic usually does not work near the rift, and even less inside it?
I have a decent amount of mundane income pool remaining. I may just get some mundane weapons to prepare for nonmagical combat. Sahme Sweetwater is a bit bulky so he might fair alright in a prepared melee.
Also, some alchemist items might be helpful since they are not magic based and should work fine inside the Rift.
And regarding tactics; I am a little nervous about riding into a canyon filling up with an orc amry.
reefwood, are we going to have some options on how we approch? I know we are on a pressed ride to find the missing unit, but I also don't want to ride into a trap.
