A PLACE THE DM WILL ADD MORE IN DEPTH (LONGER) DETAILS ABOUT THE PEOPLE/PLACES WITHIN HOUGHTON
The Kingdom of Houghton- a nation ruled by a Parliamentary Monarchy. The majority of the population is human as is the royal family (the Houghtons.) The area consists of rolling hills, lush grasslands, forests, coastal marshes, several large cities, and many farming communities.
Notable Locations:
Three Roads (large city): nation’s capital
Duvik's Pass (small town): conventional
Marsh Bay (large city): commercial port
Pike Line (fort): military outpost
A Brief History: the kingdom of Houghton has stood for three generations. The founder (King Benedict Houghton I) is the great grandfather of the current ruler, King Benedict Houghton III. Before he was king, Benedict Houghton was a skilled general leading the armies of Grandross Del Pullzo, a larger kingdom south of modern day Houghton.
In those days the Kingdom of Houghton was still a part of Grandross Del Pullzo and had many troubles. In the North; orc raiders poured down from the Serpentcoil Mountains. In the name of their god, Gruumsh, the orcs took what pleased them and burned the rest. To the East; war between desert elves and hobgoblins cut off trade routes and destabilized the entire region. And to the West; the coastal city of Marsh Bay was on the verge of rebellion. The city's wizards and nobles had always bristled under the yoke of Grandross Del Pullzo and they now spoke openly of independence.
The Emperor of Grandross Del Pullzo sent his prized general, Benedict Houghton to bring order to the province. Benedict Houghton possessed the iron will of a soldier and the razor wit of a politician. Through a series of fortunate events and skilled tactics (the details of which we shall let the historians argue over) General Benedict was able to come to several resolutions. With the use of Grandross Del Pullzo’s mighty army Benedict eradicated the orc population south of the Serpentcoil Mountains and beyond. Benedict chased the orcs up the mountains without mercy. In a legendary act of heroism he charged forth, cutting himself and his elite squad of Purple Dragons off from the rest of his army and supply train. Fearlessly Benedict Houghton and his soldiers cut deep into the Great Orc Planes. Bards and tavern folk will sing of these days for generations to come.
Eventually Benedict was able to take refuge in the frontier city of Fortune. Here he formed personal alliances and military backing. The details of this exchange are unclear except that Benedict vowed to always respect Fortune’s independence, despite the Emperor of Grandross Del Pullzo’s claim of ownership. Perhaps this willingness to shrug off the Emperor’s edicts is what caused the wizard’s of Marsh Bay to seek out an alliance with General Benedict Houghton. In a vow of mutual reliance Benedict publically supported Marsh Bay’s declaration of independence.
The Emperor, infuriated, made his own declaration. Benedict Houghton, the Ruling Council of Marsh Bay, and any who supported them were hereby sentenced to immediate execution; though it was too late. The charismatic Benedict Houghton was the savior of the Northern Province (most commoners and nobles throughout Grandross Del Pullzo adored him as well.) He had the backing of his soldiers, the wizards of Marsh Bay, and the populace of the region. The trap was set and the emperor had fallen for that final ploy Benedict needed. When the emperor declared Benedict a traitor it allowed Benedict to secede the entire north region from Grandross Del Pullzo, “…for the good of the land and the good of the people.” He established a Parliament with select representatives from across the region which quickly and unanimously proclaimed him King Benedict Houghton.
Besides some symbolic battles along the disputed boarders the secession had minimal resistance from the Emperor; in part due to a seemingly unrelated turn of luck for Benedict. An elven assassin from the eastern desert murdered the Emperor shortly after the Houghton secession; something to do with a water dispute. The inheriting emperor being only seven years in age and honor bound to revenge his father’s death could not afford to spend resources fighting Houghton. Always the diplomat, newly crowned King Houghton offered a declaration of peace between Grandross Del Pullzo and Houghton. In an open ceremony he declared lasting peace in memorial of his “lifelong friend and brother,” the former emperor and in celebration his “new friend and comrade” the young emperor heir.
In the months to follow King Houghton established the city of Three Roads as his new capital city and formally named his kingdom, Houghton. The years since have been ones of relative peace and stability.
And thus the story of one man became the birth of a new nation.
