Local Nobility Rank And Titles (in order by rank):
Duke (Duchess): the highest hereditary title outside the royal family
Marrquis (Marquess): French "frontier, frontier territory" - counts who are granted extra powers because they guard border areas.
Earl: Anglo-Saxon title meaning "chieftain." Granted authority over their own regions with right of judgment in provincial courts, as delegated by the king. They collected fines and taxes and in return received a "third penny", one-third of the money they collected. In wartime they led the king's armies.
Viscount (Viscountess): Anglo-Saxon (root of the non-nobility, royal-appointed office of Sheriff).
Baron (Baroness): lowest grade of nobility
Lord/ Knight: Either of noble birth or elevated landholders who have sworn allegiance to defend local rulers (and by default the royal crown.)
