This is kind of random, but I had a couple people asking me about RPGs over the past week, and in explaining the kinds of characters that can be played (which is anything, really, with all the different systems out there), it was funny to hear myself talk about going from a D&D war campaign in a fantasy world (wizard = magic, fighter = sword, rogue = sneaky, cleric = healer) to more recently playing vampires in the dark ages and next week being mice warriors in a forest. I was amused by myself.

Ha, yeah. I have a general explanation I use. Basically I say RPGs are typically a mix of group storytelling and a traditional board game, the degree how much each aspect is used depends on the system and the player’s interest. That’s usually about as far I go unless someone seems interested in more.

I definitely went into more detail than usual when explaining stuff to the people mentioned above. My simple explanation is that D&D is a mix of storytelling and math with the amount of each varying based on the group.
