Bam! Hobgoblin Monks based off the Hungry Ghost Monk archtype.
The Order of Hungry Ghosts
Leadership: The Council of Masters, led by the Grand Master
Symbol: Vampire Bat
Code of True Victory:Victory by any means is not desirable. Instead one should strive for True Victories. A True Victory proves your superiority. One that does not is an illusion and temporary. There are many different paths that lead to True Victories including peaceful victories, victory by sacrifice, even a truce.
By following these tenants a monk can achieve True Victory.
Act Humbly. Do not show-off your skills or provoke others to test your mettle. Act courteously toward others. You must be a guardian of civilization, yet you must not allow civilization to destroy needlessly.
Act Prudently. When a threat is imminent; counter attack as soon as possible. Attack preemptively when able.
Act Decisively. Once committed; act with maximum effectiveness and efficiency in order to neutralize the opponent as quickly as possible. When challenged, you must be ready to take a life.
Act Courageously. Do not focus on what might be lost, but instead what might be gained. Any defense should be coupled with an equal or greater offense. You will suffer on your way to True Victory. Do not seek revenge nor cling to the past, for they will impede your path forward.
HISTORY
The Order of Hungry Ghosts began during a time when a hobgoblin empire ruled over a secured and powerful empire. The story goes that an insignificant hobgoblin named Oktar was born with necromantic gifts. Like most hobgoblins born with an aptitude for the arcane Oktar was forced to live alone on the fringes of society except when the elders called upon him. Discontent with living the life of a disrespected servant he fled the hobgoblin cities to contemplate in the mountains. There he developed the Hungry Ghost martial arts technique; combining physical combat with his necromantic insights.
Oktar came down from the mountains and gained renown as a dangerous and capable warrior. He took to recruiting promising pupils and built a fortress in the mountains where he could train them in secret. The Order of Hungry Ghosts has withstood the collapse of the hobgoblin empire and its members continue to train in their secluded mountain fortress. The Order now only selects the most promising youths from the hobgoblin training stocks.
CURRENT PRACTICES
While the name Oktar has fallen from hobgoblin memory The Order of Hungry Ghosts is still seen with a mix of fear and respect because of their use of “combat magic.” They have a well deserved reputation as skilled spies and assassins for hire.
The tenets of The Order stress what they call True Victories. These goals are seen as personal achievements and can affect a monk's rank and prestige within The Order. Once a member of The Order reaches a proficient level in training they are given a large degree of autonomy. Individual members of The Order may take up employment under both hobgoblins and none hobgoblins though few would accept work from elves or dwarves.
Occasionally, members of The Order have even been known to take up two opposite sides of the same conflict (typically siding with two disputing hobgoblin tribes.) For his reason members of The Order who take up employment rarely reveal they have done so except with the highest ranking members of The Order. At least not until the job has come to a resolution, and bragging rights are earned. A monk is expected to recount the events without embellishment. A monk found to have lied or given false witness of their encounters suffers great shame and are often cast out of the order.
The Order of Hungry Ghosts, as a whole organization, strictly remains neutral in any conflicts that do not directly threaten their autonomy. They are quick to police themselves and punish (or reward) any members The Council of Masters deem worthy of attention.
