As happens from time to time, I've recently found myself part of the way through several different books, and so my progress in each has slowed to a crawl. However, I did pick a copy of War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning by Chris Hedges during a visit to the library last weekend, and while I'm only a few pages in so far, I'm finding it pretty decent. The most interesting part of the premise is the idea that war is terrible and destructive, but it also offers a seductive escape from the banality of everyday life:
"The enduring attraction of war is this: Even with its destruction and carnage it can give us what we long for in life. It can give us purpose, meaning, a reason for living. Only when we are in the midst of conflict does the shallowness and vapidness of much of our lives become apparent."

This must have been such a lonely post. Nobody else here, nobody even looking at him for over a month, until some nerds showed up to talk about Dungeons and Dragons... So sad.

Yeah, I know. I wiped all the old posts about a month ago and was thinking about trying to relaunch this board. So far, of course, I haven't done anything yet to make that happen, but I was just looking at nerdnyc.com/phpBB3/ earlier and thinking about how much I'd like to have something like that here in Portland. But yeah, one post so far.
